Guest Bathroom Refresh

If you’re anything like us, there is a room in your house that you’d love to spruce up but constantly find yourself saying “Oh, I’ll get to that next free weekend”. Up until now, that was our guest bathroom. Finally, after over 3 years of being in our home with the ever-present intention of reviving our guest bathroom, we took the plunge.

Come along as we walk you through our guest bathroom refresh. The best part? This project can be done for under $300.

When we moved into our house, we inherited very bold color choices on the walls. As someone who tends to gravitate towards more neutral colors, I decided it was time to say goodbye to blue and hello to beautiful pure white from Sherwin Williams. We did a color match to the bead boards below. The walls in our guest bathroom are textured so it took a coat of primer and then 3 coats of paint to hide the blue.

Pro Tip: If you are painting a room white, always match your door and trim color as a pure white can sometimes make your trim and doors look yellow.

After painting, we upgraded the mirror and vanity light fixture. The previous mirror was actually a small medicine cabinet so upon removal, we were left with a gaping hole in the drywall. We cut new drywall to fit the space and then sprayed texture to match the existing wall texture.

Pro Tip: If you decide to use spray texture, paint the walls after this is done as there tends to be quite a bit of overspray.

Quick side story about the inspiration for a new mirror: anytime we have guests, I generally ask them if there’s anything that could have been done to make their stay more enjoyable. After quickly realizing that people usually don’t complain about having a free place to stay, I changed the question to this: "If you could change one thing about the guest room or guest bathroom, what would it be?" Then the truth came out... nearly all of our guests said that the bathroom mirror could be bigger. With that in mind, we repurposed a round gold mirror from Target that we were no longer using in another room.

Pro Tip: Unless you want a big hole in your drywall and a floor covered in broken glass, make sure to use drywall anchors when hanging heavier mirrors.

After that, it was time to hang the vanity light fixture. We went with a single three-bulb fixture to create as much light as possible using the least amount of wall space. As always, make sure to shut off the breaker before performing electrical work.

The finishing touch was to replace the dated, silver hardware on the cabinets and the sink. We opted for gold pulls on the cabinet and drawers and a matte black faucet from Amazon.

Pro Tip: If dealing with old, rusted hardware, a little bit of penetrating oil will make your life a whole lot easier. Also, shut off the water to the sink before you start disconnecting hardware.
