Kitchen Remodel

It all started with a simple suggestion of putting in a wine refrigerator and the next thing we knew, we were completely renovating the entire kitchen.

When purchasing our 1950's ranch-style home, we always knew we wanted to remodel the kitchen. After spending so much time at home in 2020 this remodel came faster than we anticipated. This project started with the simple thought of putting a wine refrigerator into open shelving that we didn't use. We had a contractor come out just to take a look and then asked for an estimate on a few other items. A month later we were ripping out floors, removing a bar, installing an island, and painting the cabinets.

We wanted to create more of an open floor plan and that led us to remove a high-top bar that you saw as soon as you walked through the front door. We hired a reputable contractor who we had worked with before to remove the bar and install a beam for support. After that, the floors starting coming up. We wanted to match the original 1950's hardwood floors and run them throughout the kitchen and dining room but found that to be difficult as they don't make hardwood flooring like they used to. This caused us to pivot a bit to add a transition tile to define the spaces and then lay 20 x 20 White Ash tile from Daltile with a frost grout. We also used the transition tile on the step down into our dining room area.

We had the contractor build the custom island offsite and install it once the tile was laid and grouted. We wanted the island to be as functional as possible so we added two USB outlets, storage, and a pull-out trashcan, and a recycling bin. We also added two pendant lights over the island.

Our goal was to create a bright and airy kitchen. We were going to replace the black countertops with a white calacatta quartz, but once they installed the island with the white calacatta quartz we fell in love with the contrast of the black and white.

If you have been following along with us for a while, you know that we never shy away from a DIY project. We decided to save some money by painting the cabinets ourselves. We bought a paint sprayer, prepped the garage (which might have been the hardest part), and got to painting! We numbered a photo of each cabinet and drawer before taking them out to paint. This allowed us to make sure each custom drawer and cabinet went back to the correct space. The cabinets turned out beautiful, but let's just say it is worth spending the extra money to have a professional take on that job.

After two weeks of not having a functional kitchen and eating out a lot, we finally got to settle into our beautiful new kitchen!
