Main Bathroom Makeover

Updated: Aug 19, 2021

One year ago we completed our main bathroom makeover, so, it only seems fitting to take you along for the ride and share some of the project details!

Like many others, the amount of time we spent at home last year led to us finding more and more things to change around the house. But actually, when we first moved into this house, the bathroom was something we KNEW we wanted to update. So, a year after moving in, it was time to get things done.

Some of our best friends and neighbors (cough, Brooke and her husband Kyler, cough) conveniently recommended a contractor so we gave him a call and got a quote for what it would take to remodel our bathroom. The bathroom was functioning fine, but not our style and could use a little TLC. The huge tiles and brown/cream color scheme just felt dated for our modern home.

After reviewing our estimate from the contractor for labor, we started sourcing our materials so we could better estimate how much everything was going to cost. Since the room itself isn't large, we definitely wanted to optimize the space and keep it light and bright! White and grey fit the "mood" of our house and style so that's what we went with.

For this project, we ended up keeping some of the existing and replacing a lot. The graphic below details what we replaced. We did keep the vanity itself because it was custom built for the space. We also reused the vanity hardware because we liked it and it made sense to repurpose it! The toilet and window treatments stayed. The crown molding stayed but added a fresh coat of paint. The baseboards *would have* stayed but had to be replaced due to the floor leveling.

And just like that demo began! As with any remodels, you should always plan for additional issues and additional costs. Our remodel was no different. As soon as they ripped out the old brown tile, they discovered that there was MORE tile underneath! When the bathroom was previously remodeled... they just laid the new tile right on top of the old tile (definitely not ideal). Because of this, our contractors had to rip out TWO layers of tile! While I would not choose pink tile... how ironic that the original bathroom tile was hexagon shape!

Once everything was demo'd there was also an issue with the floors not being level so we went ahead leveled them out. Again, not planned but something that should be taken care of while you have it all out in the first place. FINALLY after three days of demo and fixing "behind the scenes" issues, we started to see some real visual progress!

With this being our only full bathroom, we were without a shower and tub for a full five days! Lucky for us, the Clarks let us borrow their guest bathroom for the week. Really, we probably wouldn't have been able to do this project without them!

Sourcing all of the materials was a little challenging just because we had to make sure we had everything delivered in a relatively short timeframe. Our bathroom vanity mirror did not make it in time so Chris and I had to install that on our own. I also ordered some floating shelves for above the toilet that we hung as well. Overall, we are SO happy with the results. Extensive remodeling like this is definitely an investment, but by selecting the right materials and finishes, we were able to recoup that investment when we sold our home.
